Synopsis: Roberto Devereux

TROIS ACTES
Roberto Devereux, comte d'Essex (ténor), naguère fiancé à Sara (soprano ou mezzo-soprano), aujourd'hui mariée au duc de Nottingham (baryton), est aimé de la reine Elisabeth (soprano). Accusé de félonie par le Parlement, il serait exécuté sans la clémence de la reine et l'amitié de Nottingham. Mais, croyant à une intrigue entre Sara et Roberto, Nottingham presse désormais la reine de signer l'acte fatal, ce qu'elle fait d'abord, mue par la jalousie. Se reprenant, elle décide de faire clémence (Vivi, ingrato); mais Nottingham, ayant intercepté les preuves de l'innocence de Devereux, avait pressé l'exécution de la sentence. Elisabeth fera payer au duc et à Sara, pourtant innocente, la mort de celui qu'elle aimait (Quel sangue versato), puis abdique en faveur de Jacques Ier.
